What we offer

The benefits of communicating with wider audiences range from informing policymakers to inspiring the next generation. Conveying technical information effectively to non-specialists is also highly valued by employers, for example in reporting to clients and boards of directors.  In an academic environment, non-specialists include colleagues from other disciplines and the committees of funding bodies. Researchers who can successfully engage and inform such audiences are therefore better equipped for their careers.

Our emphasis is on practical teaching, using hands-on exercises to develop key skills. We have delivered courses ranging in duration from three hours to two days, for groups of four to thirty participants. Areas in which we offer training include:

• Understanding how research hits the headlines: what journalists want and why

• Science and society: the role and responsibilities of scientists in public dialogue

• Techniques for successful media interviews

• Outreach to schools (primary and secondary levels)

• Principles of popular science writing

• Producing effective press releases

• Giving successful press conferences

• Presenting compelling public lectures

• Broadcast media basics: requirements of radio and television

• Feature-writing masterclass: the importance of narrative

• Working with documentary-makers: understanding what they want and why

• Engaging audiences through new media: webpages, blogging and podcasting
